I don’t write porn

Yet again, I see this tired old explanation trotted out as the reason women read/write slash: “We write M/M for the same reason that most straight guys get off on watching F/F porn.”

No. At least, I don’t.

Because when straight men watch ‘lesbian porn’, they don’t care about the women. They don’t want to know their names, or their feelings, or that their lives are happy, or to wish them a joyful romance. They don’t sympathise with the difficulties being gay can cause, they don’t talk to lesbians about the issues in their lives, they don’t care if they’re in love. They don’t even believe or care that lesbians really do prefer women to men.

No, they just want to see twice as much tits and pussy.

Sorry to the many people presuming to speak for me on this issue, but you’re wrong, at least about me. When I write m/m, twice the cock is not what it’s about. It’s about human beings, relationships, exploring non-traditional approaches to traditional situations, and challenging heteronormativity and assumptions about families and gender roles. My ‘gay’ men might not be realistic, and I never claim they are. But they’re more than their genitals, and I don’t write about them to get my own or anyone else’s panties wet.

If you do, okay. But don’t speak for me. Two men might be pretty to watch, but to me, they’ll always be people. If I can’t make myself care about the people having sex, then I don’ t want to watch, or read about it. And unless I can make my readers care about my characters, then I don’t want to write about them either.
